The historic bell was removed from the Doubling Point Lighthouse around 1980 by the Coast Guard. The bell was removed at the same time as the Fiddler's Reach Fog Station bell, which is currently on display at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT. Despite our efforts, the Doubling Point Lighthouse bell is still missing; but you can help us find it! If you have any information about its whereabouts, please contact us.
Here is a description:
The bell is a nickel colored, "self polishing" bell.
It is 26.5 inches high by 36 inches in diameter.
One side reads:
"Buckeye Bell Foundry 1897"
The other side reads:
"E W VanDuzen Co Cincinnati"
"US Lighthouse Establishment 1897"
When last seen, it had a clapper made of a rigid, iron vertical bar with a round ball-like end.
