Because the existing walkway from the shore to the lighthouse tower is unserviceable, the Friends of the Doubling Point Light had to temporarily stop all public access to the lighthouse property. Now, your generous donations are urgently needed to help raise the $409,500.00 to fund the restoration project to build a new 130-foot-long walkway. We are well on our way to this goal and are in the home stretch of fundraising the necessary funds.

Friends of the Doubling Point Light is thrilled to announce that we have received a very generous gift to support the walkway rebuilding project. Our “Guiding Light” partner will match all donations up to $50,000! Kindly consider sending a donation now, and your tax-deductible contribution will have twice the impact.

More about our project: The engineered plans meet the requirement that the structure be maintained as deeded and meets the approval of the Maine State Historic Preservation Commission. Calderwood Engineering has designed for us a bridge that will appear identical as the previous. It will be constructed of two treated stringers, laminated-glue timber (glue-lam) beams. All timber will match previous dimensions and will be standard pressure treated wooden timber, including the truss rail system. With the exception of the flu-lam stringers, this is all identical to the previous bridge and those on record with the State Historic Commission.

We are adding additional strength and improvement from the original design. There will be two ten inch galvanized steel “U” channels bolted to the inside of both glu-lams their entire length of 150’. Additionally there will be a 10” galvanized steel I-beam installed in the center of the walkway the entire 150’ length.

We are also delighted to share that we have signed a contract with historic restoration contractor, J. B. Leslie Company, from South Berwick, Maine. The project start date is on-or-about September 08, 2025. Fundraising and permitting are progressing well, but the success of this incredible “Guiding Light” Matching Grant is key toward reaching our revised budget need of $409,500.
