More About Our Recent Project:
The 150-foot walkway bridge to the tower was rebuilt in 2025–2026 following its collapse in 2023, made possible through the extraordinary generosity of our supporters.
This project was more than a reconstruction—it was the restoration of safe access to an iconic maritime landmark on the Kennebec River. Due to historic preservation requirements, engineering standards, and rising material and labor costs, the total project cost was a staggering $440,188! We are deeply grateful to everyone who helped make it possible.
The design, approved by the Maine State Historic Preservation Commission, preserves the historic appearance of Doubling Point Light while significantly improving safety and long-term durability.
Calderwood Engineering designed the structure to visually match the original appearance, while incorporating important modern reinforcements. Built with treated timber and laminated glulam beams, the walkway maintains the historic look while meeting today’s structural expectations.
To strengthen the bridge for future generations, galvanized steel U-channels were added along both main beams, along with a central steel I-beam running the full 150-foot length. All upper and lower catwalk decking was also fully replaced to ensure safety.
We are grateful for the skilled craftsmanship of historic restoration contractor J.B. Leslie Company. Final painting is expected in Spring/Summer 2026, marking the completion of this important restoration.
